Gift box with a separate lid

Two open trays: a base and a slightly wider, shallower lid that inverts over it. Each tray has four walls and four glued corner tabs that fold inside the left and right walls.

The lid is sized from the base plus twice the cardstock thickness and twice a clearance you control. That is a transparent approximation, not a material model: if the first lid is tight, increase the clearance; if it is loose, reduce it, and test again.

Measurement convention. A and B are the distances between opposite base score lines, not a guaranteed inside cavity. Choose a slightly larger size than your object and test the first sample.

Gift box dimension convention Left: the flat net of one tray. A and B are the distances between opposite score lines around the centre panel; h is the wall depth, which extends outward on all four sides. Corner tabs with small bevels hang off the top and bottom walls. Right: the assembled base with the slightly larger lid above it; the lid is wider by twice the stock thickness plus twice the clearance. A (between score lines) B h centre panel wall lid: A + 2t + 2c base: A lid inverts over the base

A and B are between the base score lines; h is the wall depth. Lid score rectangle = (A + 2t + 2c) × (B + 2t + 2c), wall depth hl.

Measurements

Showing the Medium box example preset. It is an editable example, not a saved design or a measured standard.

Units
Base tray

Distance between the two opposite base score lines, not the finished inside cavity. Allowed: 40–250 mm.

Distance between the other two base score lines. Allowed: 40–250 mm.

Lid

Cannot exceed the base wall depth. Allowed: 8–40 mm.

Lid fit

Measure your stock with calipers if you can. Light cardstock is often about 0.3 mm. Paper weight (gsm) is not a thickness. Allowed: 0.1–0.6 mm.

Increase if the lid is tight, reduce if it is loose, then test again. Allowed: 0.25–2 mm.

Type decimals with a point (for example 60.5). Fractions such as 1 1/2 are not supported yet; use 1.5 instead. Switching units keeps the exact measurements.

Paper and PDF options

Paper settings change the sheet layout only. They never change the product dimensions.

Border kept clear around the page. A 12 mm header and an 18 mm footer sit inside it. Allowed: 5–20 mm.

Whole number from 1 to 100. A box counts one base and one lid. The quantity never changes the cut file.

Text for printable PDF

Optional. Printed in black with the bundled Inter font: brand line 10 pt, second line 8 pt. Centred on the lid’s top panel, at least 4 mm inside the score lines. Nothing is printed on the base or the glue tabs. Not included in the cut-and-score SVG.

Free, no account. Files keep the generated dimensions; print at 100% and check the 50 mm ruler before cutting.

One piece per page on a page sized to the piece (base tray 180 × 180 mm; lid tray 151.6 × 151.6 mm). It is not tiled and is not meant for the paper selected above.

One file per unique piece at exact size. Quantity does not duplicate cut geometry. Assign the SCORE group to your cutter’s scoring or fold operation.

Worked example

For A = 100, B = 70 and h = 30 mm with 0.3 mm stock, 0.5 mm clearance and a 15 mm lid wall: the base net is 160 × 130 mm with 15 mm corner tabs and 3 mm bevels; the lid score rectangle is 101.6 × 71.6 mm and its net is 131.6 × 101.6 mm with 14 mm tabs. The upper-left base tab has corners at (30, 0), (30, 30), (15, 27) and (15, 3) mm.

The medium box preset gives these generated values:

How to make it

Gift box assembly: tabs inside, lid separate, lid inverted Step 1: the four walls fold up and each corner tab folds inward so it sits against the inside face of the neighbouring left or right wall, where it is glued. Step 2: the lid, a shallower and slightly wider tray, is built the same way. Step 3: the lid is turned over and lowered onto the base. 1. fold walls up, tabs inside 2. build the lid the same way 3. invert the lid onto the base tab glued to inside of side wall shallower, wider by 2t + 2c
  1. Print at actual size Print the base and lid sheets at 100% / Actual size on cardstock. Check the 50 mm ruler on each sheet.
  2. Cut the outlines Cut each tray along its solid outline, including the small bevels on the four corner tabs. Do not cut the dashed lines.
  3. Score the fold lines Score the dashed rectangle around the centre panel and the four short tab roots. Fold all walls upward and fold each tab inward along its root.
  4. Fold the tabs inside the long walls The tabs on the top and bottom walls tuck inside the left and right walls. Glue each hatched tab to the inside face of the neighbouring wall and hold until set.
  5. Assemble the lid the same way The lid is a slightly wider, shallower tray. Build it separately with the tabs inside.
  6. Fit the lid and adjust Turn the lid over and lower it onto the base. If it is tight, increase the lid clearance c; if it is loose, reduce c. Print one more sample before a batch. The calibration ruler checks scale, not lid fit.

Every template sheet carries a 50 mm ruler in its footer. Before cutting a batch, print this one-page test and measure it. It is a separate download and is not a template sheet.

One page with horizontal and vertical 50 mm references and a 50 × 50 mm square. Print at 100% and measure.
